Our Cruise Questions of the Week:

Q. Many cruise-related web sites claim to have the best deals. Which one really does? Should we deal directly with the cruise line or is it better to book a cruise with an agent?  Who will give us the better deal?

A. When booking a cruise, the more you shop around.... the better. No matter what you read or see on the internet,  no single cruise agency offers the best deals.  In fact, they all offer about the same prices, however, a high-volume agency with ties to a particular cruise line, may sweeten the deal with shipboard credits ( $50-300 per stateroom or more )  or other amenities, and that adds value and savings to the deal. Many cruise lines have their own web sites and sell online directly to the consumer, bypassing a travel agent. Some offer their own exclusive deals. To find some of the best deals, first sign up for free e-mail alerts from the cruise lines themselves, at sites like Cruise Direct Online, Expedia, or Travelocity.

One final note: Due to the economy, cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and others have been extremely aggressive about filling all their cabins, so landing a last minute deal may not be as attractive as it once appeared. If you wait until the last minute, you often end up with a less than desirable cabin. One that's across from the laundry, or one deck directly under or over the disco, or the window has an obstructed view. You might get some light, along with a view of a lifeboat.

In addition to researching online for the best cruise deals, you should know as much as you can about the ship and cruise line you are considering taking. So read all the cruise reviews you can. One source is Cruise Reviews Online. They have both consumer reviews and reviews written by professional travel writers. You can also find consumer comments at the Cruise Reports forum.

According to USA Today, "If you are thinking of booking one of the super deals on cruises that have been floating around the marketplace this year, you might want to act sooner rather than later."  Cruise prices may have bottomed and may be heading up.  "The pricing has started to show limited signs of moving in the right direction," says NCL CEO Kevin Sheehan. "We think we've seen the market bottom."  Read the entire article

Q. How can I save money on shore excursions. Do I have to book them with the Cruise line? Are there reliable sightseeing operators who have cheaper prices?

A. You can save hundred's of dollars if your book shore excursions on your own. It's easy to find sightseeing companies in every port-of-call. Just Google the port name, narrow your search for sightseeing tours, browse their web sites, contact the local Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau, then give them a call and talk about your needs. Hint: Never book a tour online without first finding out everything you need to know about the operator. Make sure they are properly licensed. Talk to others who have used their services.

Top 10 Tips For Stretching Vacation Dollars

 On A Cruise Vacation

Here are some tips for planning a value-added cruise vacation:

  1. CLIA member cruise lines offer inclusive pricing. Accommodations, meals, entertainment, use of most ship's facilities, and transportation from destination to destination are all included in the cruise price; this means the consumer is already off to a great start in realizing value for money spent.

  2. Cruises are offered in every possible price category. Spend a little or spend a lot; it's easy to pick the line that matches your budget.

  3. Cruises come in every length, from three days to three months. If budget is a high priority, pick a shorter cruise.

  4. CLIA member cruise lines operate all over the world. By picking an "off season" destination - the Caribbean this summer, for example - travelers can often save money without losing any of the fun, excitement and pleasure of vacationing in the tropics.

  5. With a weak U.S. dollar, planning a European cruise and paying in advance, in dollars, often represents added value compared to a European vacation paid in local currencies.

  6. On most ships, the price of your cruise is based on your choice of accommodations, nothing else. Most ships offer a wide choice of inside and ocean view staterooms, staterooms with balconies, even suites. If budget is a consideration, choose an inexpensive inside stateroom and enjoy the same dining, entertainment and use of ship's facilities as everyone else.

  7. Most CLIA member ships offer a wide variety of accommodations. If spacious, luxurious accommodations are your top priority, choose a cruise line whose suites match your budget.

  8. Cruises are an ideal choice for families, extended families and friends who want to share a memorable vacation. Put together your own group of cruisers and ask for a group rate.

  9. There are more than 30 homeports for cruise ships in the United States. Wherever you live, pick a cruise you can drive to in order to save on the cost of airfare.

  10. Most important, take advantage of the expertise, experience and knowledge of a CLIA-certified travel agent. No type of vacation offers more variety than cruising; you'll enjoy extra satisfaction–and that, after all, is what value really means–by matching your cruise with your tastes, interests and budget. And, that is what CLIA's 16,000 travel agents around the country do best.
