PORTS OF CALL
HILO, HAWAII
Welcome to the lush, tropical eastern coast of
The Big Island of Hawaii. Here, Hilo is nestled
among old banyan trees and elegant, manicured
parks. Drive north along the emerald green Hilo-Hamakua
Heritage Coast to the mystical Waipio Valley
where the rainforest yields wild ginger,
towering bamboo and hundreds-foot-high
waterfalls crowned by rainbows. Pride of
America offers the rare opportunity to view
Mount Kilauea’s awesome power as you sail en
route to Maui.
HONOLULU, OAHU
Like giant polished gems, sparkling Diamond Head
Crater and glistening Waikiki Beach surround
this cosmopolitan and surprisingly verdant city.
Within Honolulu’s boundaries are lush
rainforests, ancient temples, deep sea caves and
sacred sites. You won’t want to miss the
hallowed memorials at Pearl Harbor including USS
Arizona and Punchbowl National Cemetery. Plan to
stay a few extra days to enjoy all that
sophisticated Honolulu has to offer.
KAHULUI, MAUI
Maui offers two famous dormant volcanoes:
Mount Haleakalã, known as the House of the Sun,”
and Pu’u Kukui whose caldera has eroded into the
scenic valley of ‘lao. While here, take the
spectacular 50-mile Road to Hana, relax on your
choice of hundreds of pristine beaches, hit the
links at the spectacular golf courses of West
Maui or enjoy the world-famous Pacific Paradise
Luau. Most itineraries offer you plenty of time
for an optional tour to the island of Lanai.
KONA, HAWAI’I
On the sun-drenched eastern slopes of the Big
Island of Hawaii rests enticing Kona. Here
you’ll find stark, black moonscapes, cool,
fertile fields, steep slopes that sprout famous
Kona coffee beans, macadamia nuts and a
profusion of exotic tropical flowers. The Big
Island of Hawaii’s Gold Coast also offers four
world-class golf courses available to you with
the NCL Golf Hawaii Program.
LAHAINA, MAUI
Rich in history and charm, Lahaina was once the
capitol of Hawaii and the largest whaling port
of the Pacific. Today you can explore its
beautifully restored buildings, museums,
missionary homes and a replica of a 19th century
whaling ship. Take a cultural walking tour with
a local guide who will bring you to some of
Maui’s most sacred and significant
archaeological sites.
NAWILIWILI, KAUAI
Nawiliwili is a quaint port known as the gateway
to this Garden Isle’s extravagant beauty. From Mt. Wai’ale’ale Crater—which averages over
400 inches of rain per year, to dramatic Waimea
Canyon —‘the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, to the
plunging cliffs of the Na Pall Coast, to the
National Tropical Botanical Gardens, you’ll find
an endless array of exotic spots to explore.
Your journey through paradise begins in
Honolulu,
“The Gathering Place.” Enjoy
chic Waikiki Beach and
discover the rich culture of Polynesian
sensuality, American sophistication and Asian
mystique.
There’s a reason Maui is known as
“The Magic Isle.” Actually,
there are several. And don’t miss NCL’s
exclusive Hoku Nui Lu‘au, with its bountiful
feasts and sensational song and dance show.
“The Island of Discovery” is
the earthly Garden of Eden. See Waimea Canyon,
the Grand Canyon of the Pacific; Wailua Falls; Fern Grotto and the Na Pali Coast
– some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Hawaii.“The
Big Island”
of Hawaii is surrounded by natural wonders like
black & white sand beaches, active volcanoes,
cliffs, deserts and snow-capped mountains.

Question of the
Week
What's A Luau?
The Hawaiians sure know how to throw a party. Sprays of
beautiful flowers, bands of exotic dancers, and tons of
mouth-watering food make an authentic Hawaiian luau one
of the highlights of any visit to these gorgeous
islands. So throw on a lei (a traditional garland of
flowers, ferns, nuts or shells), warm up your hula
hands, and brush up on your luau know-how.
A luau is a traditional Hawaiian celebration
with lots of food, flowers, and Hawaiian or
Polynesian entertainment. The luau usually
centers around the kalua pig, which is placed in
an underground oven (called an imu) with other
dishes like lau lau - taro leaves wrapped around
fish and chicken or pork and cooked in a ti leaf
bundle.
Other delicious Hawaiian foods you'll find at a
luau include: poi (made from pounded taro root),
lomi lomi (salted salmon with tomato and onion),
and haupia (coconut pudding). Entertainment such
as hula and fire dancing will keep the energy
flowing before and after you eat. No luau would
be complete without the colorful, fragrant
flowers - mainly orchids and anthuriums - that
have become a symbol of Hawaii. You're sure to
receive a lei as a sign of welcome upon your
arrival at the luau. And if you're looking for a
date, place a flower behind your right ear to
let others know you're available.

Any
reason to party is reason for a luau -
graduations, weddings, a baby's first birthday.
The first luau was a celebration in honor of
unity and togetherness. In ancient Hawaii, men
and women were not allowed to dine together. And
women and commoners were forbidden to eat
delicacies such as banana, coconut and many
species of fish. But when King Kamehameha
abolished these ancient religious practices in
1819 and invited the local men and women to a
feast, the luau was born.
The luau has changed a little over the years:
luau participants once sat on lauhala mats on
the floor and ate with their fingers. And, while
you may have a fork and knife for a modern luau,
feel free to ditch them and dig in the old
fashioned way.
