Port of Whittier,
Alaska
DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Driving from
Anchorage to Whittier. Travel at your own pace along
the Seward Highway to Whittier. Turn left off the
highway at Portage Glacier Road and continue forward
to Bear Valley, yielding to the left at the "Y" in
the road. To access Whittier, proceed through the
Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest shared
rail / vehicle tunnel ( 2.5 miles ) in North
America. The one-lane tunnel must be shared by cars
and trains traveling in both directions. Follow the
signs to Pier.
PLAN YOUR TIME
Caution...when the
trains are using this one lane tunnel, traffic is
held at both ends to allow the train to pass. Also
this tunnel is a one lane tunnel that allows traffic
to flow only one direction at a time. It changes in
direction every half hour to allow traffic to move
in both directions. Be sure to allow extra time to
allow for a possible delay from this minor
stipulation.
Driving time from
Anchorage to Whittier averages around 1 and ½ hours
depending upon when you reach the Whittier tunnel
entrance. Traffic through the tunnel is limited to
one direction and alternates on ½ hour intervals.
Whittier Tunnel Fee
is $12.00 for passenger cars, trucks and
recreational vehicles 28 feet or less in length.
To Whittier:
Cars leave on the half hour, from 5:30am to
10:30pm.
From Whittier:
Cars leave on the hour, from 6am to
11pm.
Arrive at least
10 minutes prior to tunnel opening.
Give yourself another
20 - 30 minutes to get through the
tunnel. The drive is only 10 minutes, but you could
be delayed.
Allow a minimum of
one hour to drive from Anchorage to Bear
Valley, the tunnel terminus.
For early morning
cruises use the 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30
tunnel opening into Whittier.
For early
afternoon cruises use the 10:30 or
11:30 tunnel openings into Whittier.
