Affordable Fun

Today, cruise lines have made it easy - and affordable - for families to vacation at sea. There are itineraries geared to any family's schedule, from short cruises of three to five days (perfect for weekend getaways) to week-long and longer voyages.

Here is an example....from Holland America.

Consider a family-friendly cruise — with 3rd & 4th fares from only $99*!

From sunny cruises in the Caribbean or Mexico to exciting Canada & New England adventures, there's a cruise to suit every family — and onboard activities for every family member. Club HAL® was created just for kids; the Oasis gives teens a place of their own; while the Greenhouse Spa & Salon and the Culinary Arts Center are only two of many options for adults. Now's the time to plan your cruise vacation at an exceptional value.

Savor a classic Mexico experience from $449*

Many cruise lines feature special children's clubs, tours and amenities, as well as free or reduced fares for children sharing a cabin with adults.

Toddlers, Teens and All Ages In Between

Generally speaking, activities are designed with specific age

groups in mind, and are fun and educational. Don't be surprised to see kids engrossed in a variety of cool pursuits, from learning to play the ukulele and dance the hula to getting the basics of computer programming. It's all part of the fun, like the puppet workshops, talent shows, scavenger hunts, stargazing and pool games, and the poolside "coketail," pizza and ice cream parties. These reduced fares, plus the fact that all food, transportation and activities are included in the cost of a cruise, makes a cruise one of the best vacation values for budget-conscious families.

Holland America Debuts Family Reunion Program

Family reunions can present a challenge. How to host one? Who's going to make all the arrangements? Not having those responsibilities is one big

plus of having your reunion on a cruise ship.

This month, Holland America Line introduced its new Family Reunion Program, which offers various amenities to families booking at least five

staterooms. Families booking five to nine cabins get special group pricing, a fountain soda package for every member of the family (unlimited soft

drinks throughout the voyage), one family photo per stateroom, and either family dinner in the line's alternative Pinnacle Grill Restaurant or

(on Caribbean cruises) free rentals of snorkel gear and swim mats or banana boat rides for all on Half Moon Cay, Holland America's private island.

Families booking ten or more cabins also get a Head-of-the-Family reward: one complimentary upgrade from an outside stateroom to a veranda.

(Family groups booking five or more cabins are also eligible for the one-cabin upgrade on holiday cruises.)

Hassle-Free: Unpack once and you're done, no flying from port to port.

Great Value: Compared to resort hotels and land-based tours, the price is right!

Family Time Together:  Quality time together throughout the day with activities that can be shared and suitable for the whole family.

A Safe Place: Kids have the freedom to roam and explore the ship. Mom and Dad can even keep tabs on the kids with personal communication devices.

New Passport Rules

New government regulations took effect Monday, June 1, that require the additional identification for cruise passengers and land travelers returning to the United States.

However, there are exceptions for children and some cruises:

Cruises: Under the new regulations, U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises -- those that begin and end at the same U.S. port -- to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean will be able to enter the U.S. with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license.

While these documents are typically all you need at ports-of-call within
Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean, most cruise lines recommend that travelers obtain passports. If a you have an emergency and need to fly home from a port-of-call in in a foreign country, for example, you will need a passport for air travel.

Travelers also should check whether a passport is required by any country on their cruise.

Children: Under the new regulations, U.S. citizen children under the age of 16 arriving by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean will be able to present an original or copy of their birth certificate to return to the country.

For more information on travel requirements, see the Department of Homeland Security's www.GetYouHome.gov. web site.
