Popular Family Reunion Destinations Include Cruises,
Caribbean, Resorts, Florida and Mexico
A recent survey sponsored by the
American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and Vacation.com found that
families from all over the world are showing increased interest in
catching up with loved ones and creating new family memories at family
reunions—and doing so in some exotic locales. Of the 400-plus ASTA and
Vacation.com travel agents polled, two thirds (66.9 percent) reported
booking travel accommodations for family reunions within the past
year. And almost as many (64.5 percent) reported an increase in
requests to book family reunion trips over the past five years. Some
responding travel agents noted that another reason for the increased
popularity of family reunions is the increased interest among young
people in their family roots and genealogy.
On average, respondents booked nine
trips per year for groups of 10 to 25 people. When asked where people
are hosting their family reunions, respondents indicated cruise ships
(52.8 percent) are by far the most popular venues followed by
all-inclusive resorts (19.8 percent). The survey respondents also
listed cruises (42.9 percent) as the most popular destination for
family reunion trips followed by the Caribbean (25.3 percent), resorts
(20.3 percent), Florida (16.6 percent) and Mexico (13.9 percent).
Among other trends in family reunions
are the facts that grandparents are now initiating family reunion
plans and many reunions are being planned around milestone events like
anniversaries and weddings. Family reunion travelers also are choosing
creative venues such as: cruise ships, all-inclusive resorts in which
to host their reunions. River rafting on the Snake River, tours of
cemeteries in Ireland, East African safaris, Galapagos Islands tours,
stays at dude ranches, visiting bike week in Daytona Beach, Fla., and
European trips to retrace family heritage are mentioned as among the
more adventurous reunion activities.
