Featuring the CRUISE INSIDER'S LIST®
CRUISE TIP: How to get one of the best
cabins on a ship for the cheapest price.
Q. Could I pay for an inside cabin and receive a balcony or even a suite?
A. Are you a gambler? Oh, not the type to put thousands of dollars down on the
table in Las Vegas. Just the penny-ante kind. Do you like to cruise and think
it's important to know where onboard ship your sleeping months before your ship
leaves the dock?
It's wave season. Cruise lines are offering some great deals to entice you to
book early. Today, you will find many cruise line ads that tout a free upgrade
from an ocean view to a balcony cabin or an inside cabin to an obstructed-view
outside cabin. But did you know that if you ask for a cabin assignment for one
of these promotions, that's all your likely to get. However, there is a way to
possibly get even more. It's called taking a "guarantee" rather than a cabin
assignment.
A "Guarantee" form of reservation does not offer a specific stateroom assignment
at the time you book and place a deposit for your cruise. If you choose this
type of reservation, you will receive your stateroom assignment from the cruise
line upon check-in at the pier on the day of departure, or at anytime between
the day you booked the cruise and sailing day. Please note that the cruise line
will be "guaranteeing" a stateroom in the category that you booked or higher. If
you receive a stateroom assignment in a higher category than booked, it would be
a no-extra charge upgrade. A "higher" category could mean the same type of
accommodation, just on a higher deck or a better location on the same deck, or a
higher type of cabin, say from an inside cabin to an ocean view. The choice and
location of the stateroom is up to the cruise line. In most cases this
"guarantee" type of reservation was less expensive than choosing a specific
cabin at the time you made the reservation.
Under normal circumstances, your gambling that the cruise line will run out of
cabin space in the category you booked and give you an upgrade. Hopefully, one
that moves you from an inside cabin to an ocean view. That can happen, but it's
not a promise that it will happen.
But now, with the cruise line offering up front a FREE upgrade, you can
double-up sort of speak, your chances of getting a better than expected upgrade.
Here's how....
When you book that special "FREE" upgrade promotion, don't ask for a cabin
assignment. If you ask for an assignment, all you are likely to get, is what was
offered in the ad.
However, as you have already been promised the upgrade in cabin type i.e. inside
to ocean view, or ocean view to balcony at no extra cost , take the "guarantee'.
That way, you have a 50/50 chance of being bumped-up again! That would in effect
be a double-upgrade, say from an inside cabin to ocean view
( the original offer ) and then again to a
balcony ( based on the guarantee ). Once again, that can happen, but it's not a
promise that it will happen.
But if it does, boy did your "nickel" bet pay off!
P.S. If you mind the possibility that you
might get a cabin above the disco, across from the laundry room or next to the
stairs, take the cabin assignment and enjoy your cruise.
