Multigenerational Travel Takes To The Sea

by Raye & Marty Trencher

Cruise Traveler Magazine

Today a family group may consist of the grandparents, parents and their children. Cruises allow a multigenerational family to take their children on cruises that offer structured programs for children of all ages from tots to teenagers, so they can enjoy adult time and the kids can have fun and interact with others on their own.

Here's one example....

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas or Allure of the Seas offer families an unprecedented array of activities.

On both Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas or Allure of the Seas, even the youngest of children have their own dedicated space and activity programs,

There are the Royal Babies and Royal Tots programs which caters to ages 6 months to 18 months and ages 18 months to 36 months, respectively, and is offered on the Allure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, as well as Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean's Youth Staff have developed age-appropriate curriculums to engage and entertain kids of all ages.

Entertainment for the whole family.

Broadway style shows, AquaTheater shows, Rock-Climbing walls, FlowRider® surf simulators, Mini-Golf, Ice Skating, and the first-ever Carousel at sea.

Adults get time to play too!

While the young ones are at play at Adventure Ocean®, parents can have the time of their lives, with comedy shows, nightclubs, cool lounges, and more.

With My Family Time DiningSM, their expedited dining service, your kids (ages 3 – 11) are served their meals and then picked up by our Adventure Ocean® staff so you can enjoy the rest of the dinner. Other family dining options include the Windjammer or Sorrento's for great pizza.

Loads of laughter and unforgettable experiences go hand-in-hand when cruising with Royal Caribbean.

Games, events and activities are going on all over the ship throughout the day and into the evening hours, making family time a great time. And thanks to Royal Caribbean's award-winning Adventure Ocean® youth program and their all-new DreamWorks Experience, children love their Royal Caribbean cruise vacation just as much as their parents.

Royal Babies & Royal Tots
Royal Caribbean's Royal Babies program (ages 6-18 months) offers the tiniest guests and their parents interactive classes filled with enriching activities developed by early childhood experts at Fisher-Price®. Our Royal Tots program (ages 18-36 months) offers 45-minute interactive playground sessions filled with age-appropriate activities and toys. Both programs are hosted by their trained youth staff. A parent or caregiver must accompany child during all activity sessions.

Adventure Ocean® youth programs
With Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean® youth programs, not only will your children's time on board be fun, it will be educational too! Aquanauts (ages 3-5 years) will have fun conducting cool experiments and becoming Certified Jr. Adventure Scientists. Royal Caribbean's specially designed Explorers program (ages 6-8 years) is packed with exciting activities from themed parties to making gummy candies. Voyagers (ages 9-11 years) will explore a range of activities that puts the "cool" back into learning.

Tween & Teen Programs
Whether hanging out with other cruisers or checking out games, sports and parties are on your tween's agenda, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas teen-only spots are the places to go. Their Teen program allows older kids the freedom to come and go as they please. They'll love it so much the only thing you might wish for is a little more time with your kids.

Nursery Services & Sitters at Sea
The Babies and Tots Nursery offers parents a drop-off option in the daytime and evening, where their children can be left in the trusting care of trained professionals. Various playgrounds have been created by Fisher-Price® and Crayola® for our young cruisers. For a nominal fee, Sitters at Sea offers babysitting services, both in a group setting, and individually in parents' stateroom. Children must be at least 1 year old.

Finely...
While we have reviewed just Royal Caribbean's family programs, similar programs are available on a Carnival Cruise, Disney Cruise Line or Norwegian Cruise Line. To a lesser extent children's programs can also be found on Celebrity, Princess or Holland America cruise lines.

Allure of the Seas

Super Cruise Review Of The World's Largest Cruise Ship

Did You Know: Most cruise lines require guests to be checked in no later than 90 minutes prior to the scheduled sailing time*. Guests arriving late will not be permitted to sail. This supports government regulations in some ports that require cruise lines to submit a departure manifest 60 minutes prior to sailing. Guests are requested to complete Online Check-In no later than 3 days prior to the cruise in order to expedite the pier check-in process. *Some sailings may require an earlier check-in time. Please contact your cruise line direct for specific boarding information.

Booked on a Special fare or Discount? It is important that at least one guest per stateroom be eligible to be considered in compliance with a restricted price program, such as a Senior, Military, or Resident rate. It is also important to note that non-compliance of the restricted price program terms will result in the reservation being re-priced to the lowest available fare for that particular day. Furthermore, you will be responsible to pay for any differences immediately or else your boarding rights will be denied.

Traveling with a minor without the parent or legal guardian?
Should the last names of the parent and minor child traveling with them differ, the parent is required to present the child's valid passport and visa (if required) and the child's birth certificate (original, a notarized copy or a certified copy). The name of the parent(s) and the child must be linked through legal documentation.

Adults who are not the parent or Legal Guardian of any minor child traveling with them are required to present the child's valid passport and visa or the child's birth certificate (original, a notarized copy or a certified copy) and an original notarized letter signed by at least one of the child's parents. The notarized letter from the child's parent must authorize the traveling adult to take the child on the specific cruise, must authorize guardian to sign legal documentation/waivers for participation in any activities requiring them and must authorize the traveling adult to supervise the child and permit any medical treatment that must be administered to the child. If a non-parent adult is a Legal Guardian, the adult must present a certified certificate of Guardianship with respect to the child.
