These days, the culinary education doesn't stop with
onboard demos. Cruise lines are recognizing the appeal
of food- and wine-based shore tours -- a tastier and
more in-depth option to the traditional bus tour.
Azamara introduced new
culinary excursions to its 2010 Europe cruises,
including a tour of Slovenian salt plants, olive farms
and wine cellars, and a "pasta party" in Civitavecchia,

taste of local food and wine. Public television cooking star Jacques
Pepin is
Oceania's Executive Culinary Director, making
his mark on all the ship's restaurants.
Wine
aficionados have plenty of choices these days for
viticulture at sea. Wine bars can be found on NCL's,
Royal Caribbean's and Princess' newest ships for a
little onboard imbibing.
Next
May,
Princess
will introduce its
first West Coast wine-country
cruises aboard the Sapphire
Princess.
Cruise West offers two
California wine country itineraries, with visits to Napa
and Sonoma wineries
Celebrity turns a Vancouver-to-San Diego repositioning
cruise into a wine lover's cruise with vineyard visits,
seminars and lectures by wine experts.
Sailings coincide with harvest
season.
Celebrity Cruises offers wine-themed voyages with
wine-related activities onboard and a variety of
optional wine or food-and-wine shore excursions at the
ports of call. One such wine-themed voyage is the
Millennium's 12-night Pacific Northwest cruise from
Vancouver to San Diego on Sept. 28 (rates start at
$899).

A river of wine
flows through human history - from the ancient clay jugs found
buried next to the Nile to the glass of merlot served by your
distinguished onboard sommelier.
Pause for a moment to contemplate how the wine impacts your
senses. The deep, rich color. Its chocolate aroma mixed with a
touch of mint. A profound, deep flavor as it floods the palate.
And finally, the aftertaste.
As you reflect on the overall impression the wine leaves with
you, you realize wine is both sensual and cerebral. And you're
richer for the experience. |

IN THE NEWS
If you love wine and love to cruise there's nothing like touring
some of the most beautiful wine regions of the world, plus
sailing to many of the world's most exciting destinations.
Altogether know as a "food & wine cruise", this form of vacation
travel is attracting more and more travelers.
''We love wine and we love Europe,'' ''We had a wine event
almost every day, and a wine dinner with pairings,'' On a
seven-night Windstar cruise in the Mediterranean. The itinerary
took them to ports in Spain, France and Italy, where they
visited the famous the Tuscan wine region of Bolgheri. There,
they lunched at and toured local wineries, many thought of
highly by Wine Spectator magazine.
On a food & wine cruise you can get access to wineries not
usually visited, and to wines not usually served. Even wineries
host wine cruises like Robert Mondavi and Beringer, but many
lesser known but respected boutique vintners, also host these
cruises.
Most ''food and wine cruises'' are actually regular sailings
with a wine affinity group aboard that has paid extra for
special food & wine-oriented events. These may include private
tastings, educational talks, parties, winemaker lunches or
dinners, and excursions to wineries and vineyards ashore. Often,
such groups will get to taste the host winemaker's ''library
selections,''
especially good wines held back from regular sale.
''On a food and wine cruise you get all the benefits of
cruising, plus visits to wineries and lots of wine tastings.
It's doesn't get any better than that for wine enthusiasts" said
Marty Trencher of
Vintages
cruises. Vintages specializes in food & wine cruise
travel.
Typically, a wine group's price will include onboard wine
events, with wine-related excursions ashore. A wine cruise may
feature one or more winemakers, who bring their own wines aboard
for tastings and seminars.
On a recent food & wine event onboard an Oceania Cruise that
visited Spain, France and Italy, there were tastings of varying
vintages from these regions.
Wine cruises are social events, because they bring together a
group of people with similar interests. Some folks don't even
bother to take a bottle or two they collected ashore home, they
just have it for dinner that evening in the ship's dining room.
Who's likely to go on a food and wine cruise?
Those who have a passion for wine tend to be more affluent, so,
most wine cruises take place aboard upscale cruise ships. The
Mediterranean, where wine was first produced, is the most
popular region for wine cruises. Passengers, tend to be 45 to 65
years old, and many, nearly 50%, have never cruised before.
Not only are large, luxury liners offering wine cruises, but
smaller more intimate ships as well. Small ships such as
Oceania's Regatta and Nautica; Princess' Ocean Princess and
Royal Princess; and Azamara's Quest have less than 700
passengers onboard. River boats offer wine cruises on European
waterways like the Danube and the canals of France, or on such
American rivers as the Columbia and the Napa.
Silversea Cruises will offer 11 Wine Series voyages this year
that include special tastings, events and lectures conducted by
wine professionals. Some cruise line wine events may simply
offer a shore excursion to a vineyard and perhaps one wine
expert onboard. Not exactly a full-fledged, itinerary - filled
wine cruise, but educational nonetheless.
Wine events such as tastings and vineyard visits can be found
many cruise ships these days. You will also find wine bars, and
on the Celebrity Solstice an elegant wine tasting room. |
